Occupational Therapy Helps Symptoms of Arthritis
Notes from a Levi Occupational Therapist
If you suffer from arthritis, you may consider the following suggestions to increase your comfort and decrease pain and stiffness.
- Avoid positions that put strain on joints especially in an abnormal direction
.
- Avoid holding your body or body part in one position for a long time. This will increase your stiffness.
- Take regular rest breaks through the day. Don't start any activity you can't stop quickly if you have pain or fatigue.
- Conserve your energy through the day and the week. If you have a busy or difficult day, try to make the next day one for rest.
- Use pain as a guide for your activity level. Respect it.
- Do stretches and light exercises 2-3 times daily. Follow your physician's recommendations (See next month's "Exercise Routine for Arthritic Joints")
- Review your home with an eye for safety and convenience. Remove all tripping hazards: throw rugs, loose tiles, cords, etc.
- Move carefully and avoid rushing - the most common fall is after turning quickly!
